US Government Requests Two-Week Delay for 5G Deployment, Citing Aviation Safety

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the chief of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have asked AT&T and Verizon Communications to hold off on the planned January 5 launch of a new 5G wireless technology due to safety concerns in aviation. In a letter published Friday through Reuters, Buttigieg and FAA Administrator Steve Dickson asked AT&T Chief Executive John Stankey and Verizon Chief Executive Hans Vestberg for a delay of not more than two weeks in the context of a “proposal as a near-term solution for advancing the co-existence of 5G deployment in the C-Band and safe flight operations.”

The aviation industry as well as the FAA have expressed concern about potential interference that 5G could cause with delicate aircraft electronics such as radio altimeters, which could disrupt flights. In the past, both companies claimed that the aerospace industry was trying to keep C-Band spectrum use “hostage” until the wireless industry agreed to cover the costs of upgrading any obsolete altimeters. Buttigieg and Dickson declared that in their framework, “commercial C-band services will begin like they were planned for January, with a few exceptions in priority airports.which could disrupt flights. Buttigieg and Dickson declared that in their framework, “commercial C-band services will begin like they were planned for January, with a few exceptions in priority airports.” The companies, which were awarded the spectrum during an auction by the government earlier this year worth $80 billion, had previously agreed to take preventive actions for six months to minimize the interference.

The industry group for wireless, CTIA, has declared 5G safe, and the spectrum is utilized in more than 40 countries.
