Yes, it will help in testing, but it also adds more work to the task as you now have patches as well as the latest test suite that you can maintain and guide you through updates.
Testing patches was not the primary issue. The more significant time-sink was when the patched piece of functionality moved to a new location within the codebase. The engineer then had to get acquainted with the changes, figure out the reasons for the changes, and adapt the patch into its new version. It’s a lot of work just to maintain the status of the game.
