Five years ago, Linus Torvalds celebrated Linux’s 25th anniversary during an interview with ZDNet’s Steven Vaughan-Nichols. In the present, as Linux has celebrated its thirty-year anniversary Vaughan-Nichols interviewed Torvalds a second time and made a crucial philosophy-based point:
Looking at the larger picture, Torvalds is now of the opinion that the time that began in the early part of 1992 when Linux changed to an alternative license called the GNU Public License version 2 (GPLv2) is crucial. He says, “It wasn’t the original license, but I’m convinced it’s a big part of why Linux became so widespread.” “Not everybody loves the GPL, and I’ve had my own issues with the FSF [Free Software Foundation], but I do think the GPLv2 has been a huge deal, and people shouldn’t dismiss the licensing issues.”
He continues:
“I think the companies getting involved has been hugely important—and that may sound so obvious as to be trite and stupid, but some corners of the open-source community have been fairly negative towards any commercial involvement.”
Torvalds states that since its inception, Linux has seen “fairly continual” interest from large companies.
The interview also discusses the version control systems of Linux as well as the name Torvalds originally chose for the operating system back in 1991. (“Freax” stands for “Free Unix.”) Ten years ago, that same reporter received a surprise when he asked Torvalds which country he believed Linux would be in when it celebrated the 40th anniversary of its birth. Torvalds’ answer?
“Bah. I don’t plan that far ahead. I can barely keep my calendar for the next week in mind. I really have no idea.”
This week, Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols opted to ask Torvalds what he’s thinking about for the future of his life:
Looking ahead, Torvalds sees himself keeping on. I’m 51, and I love what I do. What would I do if I did not use Linux? gardens? It’s not likely.
Slashdot reader juul_advocate provides details. Torvalds was also approached through IT Wire to get his views regarding the 30th anniversary celebrations of Linux. “There’s just a handful of individuals who are still active and around who got involved in the year 1991.” Torvalds stated to them:
I enjoy being around that long, and it’s nice to know that others have been around for nearly the same amount of time.
But I don’t have any new information to share about it, unfortunately. While this day is an anniversary date, it’s far from an exclusive one. It marked the anniversary of the very first public announcement, but it wasn’t the first time that a code was dropped. It was later, September 17.
And the second anniversary isn’t the last anniversary, as it was the Linux 0.01 code release on September 17 that was privately announced to those who had expressed an interest following the initial announcement.
So the first actual public and real *announced* code drop was on October 5, 1991, which is when 0.02 was dropped. So I actually have three anniversaries, and they are all equally valid in my mind. “
