The website GeekyTyrant is enthusiastic about Amazon’s new eight-episode show The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which will debut on September 2 and is centred on Middle-earth’s “Second Age,” thousands of years prior to the happenings that inspired The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Since the movie is set in a totally new era, I was expecting Middle-Earth to be unlike what we’ve seen previously. Based on the first trailer made public, the movie looks similar in style to the films of Peter Jackson. However, things are sure to differ.

In a recent interview with Empire, Rings of Power concept artist John Howe teased some of the surprises to be revealed:

“This isn’t the Middle-earth you remember. This is a world that’s very vibrant. The elves are not hidden away in Mirkwood or lingering in Rivendell. They’re busy constructing kingdoms. The dwarven kingdom of Moria is not an abandoned mine, and the Grey Havens are not yet an abandoned city. I loved having the opportunity to explore that unseen history.

He also announced that the show will examine the deep seas of Middle-Earth, and he also said the show will include a group of sea-loving elves.

As Amazon’s press release says, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power “will bring audiences back to a time where great power was created and kingdoms ascended to glory, only to fall into ruin; unimaginable heroes faced adversity; hope was hung on the highest string of yarn; and the most powerful villain ever to emerge from the pen of Tolkien threatened to blanket the globe in darkness.”

The Independent says the series “has been in the works since 2017″—and the show’s creators have said that Prime Video bought the rights for $250 million (PS183m). Now Prime Video has even invited a few JRR Tolkien enthusiasts to attend an early screening of the series:

Fans who were fans of Middle Earth were nervous ahead of watching footage of the show. However, those fears soon gave way to excitement, with viewers applauding the show as well as the show’s showrunners, JD Payne and Patrick McKay… Doctor Maggie Parke said that the showrunners “ kept up with the best of us,” writing: “Their passion & knowledge gave me the impression that they were part of the family. They get it. I’m very confident…

The newspaper quotes another participant’s view that “we, as Tolkien lovers, are in good hands! Beyond that, I was completely lost. I can’t wait to see more—it’s beyond any words. “
